Little Clearing
When you’re coming into winter like you’re climbing up a mountain
And you see the forest thinning as the road keeps winding round, and
When it feels like you see a hundred miles in each direction, let me know
When you’ve found a little clearing like a hallway to a glade, and
You see branches overhead as strong as shelter can be made
And the wind seems to be saying, “why not stay here through to April?” let me know
Let me know just what the cold is saying
Let me know just how you make it through
When you’re tired of the toll you’re paying
Tell me what you do
When I was younger than my years I tried on many modes of living
Some took better than the others, some were ragged and ill-fitting
But yours I never tried without succumbing to my conscience, heading home
Looking back I can admit perhaps I stumbled out of fear
That the pull would be too strong after six months or a year
And one morning I’d wake up, gather up and turn my back on heading home
Heading home, where most things are familiar
Heading home, where you know that you’re loved
When you’re thawed and ready for a future
Find us from above

The Well

The Well
The sun and the sky, and the ocean below, taking heat as it dies
The line that we all ride, in a futile attempt just to recognize
How there’s still time to stanch the blood
Or there’s still time to pay for what they’ve done
Our crowds amass around the square
Put the weight on our back before we notice we’re there
The beauty of the cold when we’ve done all we can to be final and bold
The finite time, we happy few
What choice is mine compared to what we do?
The bottom of the well, where we’re jolting awake with dullest despair
The water hot as any hell, and the light at the top, somehow promising air
That we can see a road gone sour, if only we can compensate for the hour
As time gains speed, I find my lungs
The doubts recede, the power goes to the young
